Senate Passes Census and BEA Appropriations, Blocks Vitter Amendment

By a vote of 71-28, the Senate passed the Commerce-Justice-Science
Committee appropriations bill on Thursday. The $64.9 billion bill
provides $7.3 billion for the Census Bureau and $96.8 million for the
Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The greater part of Census Bureau funds would support the 2010 Census;
the Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics program would shift from
pilot to permanent status and receive increased funding. BEA would get
funding for improvements in service industry, regional, and state
foreign direct investment data.

The House version of the CJS appropriations bill was approved on June
18. Both versions now go to a conference committee to reconcile the
differences.

Of particular note, earlier Thursday the Senate voted 60-39 to block
consideration of the amendment proposed by Senator David Vitter (R-LA)
requiring 2010 Census questions on citizenship and immigration status.
